Chennai and other
parts of Tamil Nadu were hit with intense rainfall Sunday. With streets
waterlogged in several parts of the metropolis, schools in Chennai have remained
closed on Monday and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted
more rainfall over the coming days. An orange alert has been sounded in 14
districts of Tamil Nadu, including in Chennai, Cuddalore and Villupuram.

The heavy
rainfall, among other things, has also triggered a flood of memes on social
media with people managing to see the funny side of things amid the weather
crisis. Meme makers have found popular film dialogues to movie stills to

Pictures of Chennai’s
waterlogged streets have flooded social media with a Twitter user describing
the scenario as: “River in our street and lake in our house.”

The rains in
Chennai began on Saturday night. Initially intermittent, the downpour was
non-stop on Sunday. In the 24 hours preceding 8:30 am Monday, Perambur in
Chennai district received 14 cm rainfall.      

Low-lying homes have
been flooded and the Tamil Nadu government has deployed pump sets in 500
locations across the state. Relief camps have been organised and 50,000 food
packets distributed.

Power supply in
parts of Chennai was disrupted on Sunday. Tamil Nadu’s Minister for Electricity
Senthil Balaji inspected the electricity board head office and oversaw measures
being taken to combat the problem.

Owing to the
rains, the Madras High Court in Chennai decided to hear urgent matters in virtual
mode. Further, if judges are unable to show up, alternative benches will be
announced, the high court said adding that final hearings will only be taken up
if all parties are represented.

Prime Minister
Narendra Modi spoke to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Sunday and
discussed the situation caused by the rains. The PM is said to have assured the
chief minister of all possible support in rescue and relief work.
