The highly-anticipated movie, Gangubai Kathiawadi, released its teaser today. Starring Alia Bhatt in the main role, the movie is directed by Sanjay Leena Bhansali and revolves around the life of Gangubai Kothewali – the boss of a brothel in Kamathipura. The movie is based on a chapter from Hussain Saidi’s book ‘Mafia Queens of Mumbai’.

The plot of the movie sounds potentially powerful and women-centric. Similarly, the one-minute and 30 seconds teaser, is also full of such powerful dialogues. This article talks about three such times in the teaser that sets the tone of the movie.

“Kehte ka Kamathpura me kabhi amavas nahi hoti, kyuki waha Gangu rehti hai”:

The very first line of the teaser sets the indicated tone of the movie. This not only gives away a lot of the protagonist’s personality but also reveals how important the character and the association with the place, Kamathipura is.

“Izzat se jine ka, kisi se darne ka nahi – na police se, na MLA se,na minsiter se …..”:

This dialogue speaks a lot about the protagonist’s perseverance and what qualities she has that make her strong enough to carry the story along with her. And as we all know, Bollywood needs to represent strong women of the country who don’t always necessarily go by the rules.

“Zameen pe baithi bhaut acchhi lag rahi hai tu, aadat dal le, kyuku teri kursi toh gayi”:

This dialogue that gives the audience some more glimpse into the character shows that she is not the kind who takes competition lightly. The no-nonsense attitude that Alia Bhatt is possessing in the video with a ‘biri’ in her hand perfectly compliments the words.

Kumari apne chora nahi, shrimati kisi ne banaya nahi’: Challenging the society’s obsession with women’s chastity, Gangubai introduces herself as the President of Kamathipura with these lines. A perfect ending to the teaser, it leaves the audience anticipating more.
