Former Union Minister and veteran Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad announced his resignation from the party on Friday, August 26, 2022. He tendered a five-page resignation to Sonia Gandhi, describing the reasons behind his exit.
One of the most influential Congress leaders, Azad was a Union Minister in Dr Manmohan Singh-led United Progressive Alliance government between 2009-14. He has also held the office of the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir but resigned after the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) withdrew their support for his government.

Azad was also the opposition leader in Rajya Sabha till February 2021. He was part of the G-23 group, consisting of 23 Congress politicians, who sought changes in the party’s leadership.

Azad was born on March 7, 1949, in a small village called Soti in the Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir to Rahamatullah Batt and Basa Begum. He married Shameem Dev Azad, a popular Kashmiri singer and Padma Shri awardee in 1980, shortly after he became All India Youth Congress president.
The couple has two children, a son named Saddam Nabi Azad and a daughter Sofiya Nabi Azad.
