Gopalpur assembly constituency has Nafees Ahmad of the Samajwadi Party (SP) taking on Satyendra Rai of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Mirza Alam Beg of the Indian National Congress (INC), Ramesh Chand Yadav of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), and Sunil Kumar Yadav of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) this year in the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections.

Nafees Ahmad of the SP had won the Gopalpur seat in 2017 when the BJP swept Uttar Pradesh winning 312 of UP’s 403 assembly seats. Ahmad had beaten his closest rival Shrikrishna Pal by over 14,960 votes. Pal had contested that election on a BJP ticket.

In 2012, the seat was won by Waseem Ahmad of the SP. 

Gopalpur falls under the Azamgarh district and the Bhagalpur Lok Sabha constituency, which is made up of six assembly seats.

Ajay Kumar Mandal of the Janata Dal represented Bhagalpur as a member of Parliament in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Mandal defeated Shailesh Kumar from the Rashtriya Janata Dal with a margin of 2,77,630 votes.

The Gopalpur assembly constituency will vote in the seventh phase and the last round of the Uttar Pradesh elections on March 7, 2022, along with 53 other constituencies in 9 districts.  

Results will be declared on March 10, along with those for elections in four other states, including neighbouring Uttarakhand.
