The Union government had announced Semicon India Programme to build the semiconductor and display ecosystem in the country. The programme has generated large scale interest among companies as it received proposals of more than Rs 1.53 lakh crore in the first round closed on February 15, 2022.

The Ministry of electronics and information technology (MEITY) informed that five proposals for semiconductor and display fabs have been received with a total investment nearing $20.5 billion or Rs 153,740 crore.

“Despite aggressive timelines for submission of applications in this greenfield segment of semiconductor and display manufacturing, the scheme has elicited a good response,” the ministry said in a statement on Sunday.

Vedanta has submitted its application in a joint venture with Foxconn, IGSS Ventures Pte, Singapore, and ISMC for semiconductor fabs amounting to $13.6 billion. The applications have been received for setting up 28nm to 65nm Semiconductor Fabs with a capacity of around 120,000 wafers per month wherein $5.6 billion of financial aid from the Central Government is being sought for nearly $5.6 billion.

Vedanta and Elest have submitted applications for display fabs with the projected investment of $6.7 billion seeking financial support of $2.7 billion from the central government. Applications have been filed for setting up Gen 8.6 TFT LCD Display Fab as well as 6th Generations Display FAB for the manufacturing of the State-of-art AMOLED display panels that are used in advanced smartphones.

A scheme is being implemented for setting up of Compound Semiconductors/Silicon Photonics/Sensors Fab and Semiconductor Assembly, Testing, Marking and Packaging (ATMP) /OSAT facilities in India and building a trusted electronics value chain for application of fabrication and packaging technologies.

SPEL Semiconductor Ltd., HCL, Syrma Technology and Valenkani Electronics have registered for Semiconductor Packaging. On the other hand, Ruttonsha International Rectifier Ltd. has registered under this Scheme for compound semiconductors.

The Cabinet has approved to hand over SCL Mohali to MeitY from the Department of Space and it is being set up as a commercial fab for wider participation by Indian semiconductor design companies.

Terminus Circuits, Trispace Technologies and Curie Microelectronics have applied under the Design Linked Incentive (DLI) scheme, which has been successful in generating interest among domestic companies and startups registered in India Semiconductor Mission Portal.

India Semiconductor Mission will coordinate with the applicant companies who have also reached out to states to provide access to world-class infrastructure, the ministry said in a statement. It added that ISM will work closely with the state governments to establish high-tech clusters with 300 – 500 acres of developed land, 100 KVA Power, 50 MLD Water, availability of natural gases and common facility centres for testing and certification.
