The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday appeared on course to retain power in six municipal corporations, winning 409 of the 474 seats where results were declared till evening. According to media reports, the BJP has won 52 seats in Vadodara, 24 in Rajkot and 15 in Bhavnagar. The party is also won 93 seats in Surat, where Aam Aadmi emerged victorious on 27 seats too.

Counting of votes is being conducted in six municipal corporations in Gujarat on Tuesday. The six civic bodies that went to polls are – Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Rajkot, Surat, Bhavnagar and Jamnagar.

While the BJP aims to retain power in all the six corporations, Congress is confident of making a dent. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) are also in the fray, with both parties looking to open their accounts in the six urban civic bodies.

Election officials said that an average voter turnout of 42% was recorded in Sunday’s elections. Polling was conducted amid tight security and in adherence to COVID-19 norms.

Ahmedabad recorded the lowest turnout of 38.73%, while Jamnagar recorded the highest turnout of 49.86%, according to figures released by the State Election Commission.
