Guru Nanak Jayanti
is considered to be the biggest festival of the Sikhs. Guru Nanak Jayanti
is also known as Guru Parv, Prakash Parv, Guru Purab. Guru Nanak Jayanti is
celebrated every year on the full moon day of Kartik, Prakash Parv. This year, Guru
Parv will be celebrated on Friday, November 19. On this day the first Guru of
the Sikhs, Guru Nanak Dev was born. It was Guru Nanak Dev who founded
Sikhism.

Significance
This festival is
celebrated with great pomp across the country. Many months in advance,
the Sikh community gets involved in preparations for the procession and Prabhat
Pheri. On the day of Guru Parav, Prabhat Pheri is taken out in the
morning, in which hymns and shabads of Guru Nanak Dev are recited. This
Prabhat Pheri begins with the drums-manjirs. Not only this, processions
are also organized in many places. Langar is also organized on a large
scale by the Sikh society. There are Shabad-Kirtan and Vaak in
Gurdwaras.

History
Guru Nanak
Dev was the first Guru of Sikhism. Guru Nanak Dev was born in 1469 AD.
Nanak ji was born on Kartik Purnima in 1469 in a village named Talwandi
situated on the banks of the Ravi River in Punjab (Pakistan). However,
this birth place of Guru Nanak ji is now in Nankana Sahib, in the Punjab
province of Pakistan.
