Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday extended his wishes to people on the occasion of Hindi Diwas. The Prime Minister also said that people from different regions have played a remarkable role in making Hindi a better language.

“Wishing you all a very happy Hindi Diwas. People from different regions have played a remarkable role in making Hindi a better language. It is the result of all your efforts that Hindi is continuously making a strong identity on the global stage,” PM Modi said in a tweet.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also extended his wishes to people and urged them to use Hindi along with their mother tongue in basic works. 

“On the occasion of Hindi Diwas, I urge all the countrymen to take a pledge to progressively use official language Hindi along with their mother tongue in basic works. The progress of India is contained in the coordination of mother tongue and official language. Wishing you all a very Happy Hindi Divas,” Amit Shah said in Hindi.

On September 14, India celebrates Hindi Diwas every year to commemorate the adoption of Hindi in the Devanagari script as one of the official languages of the nation.

One of the reasons behind celebrating this day is to prevent the increasing trend of the English language in the nation and the neglect of Hindi. It is reportedly said that Mahatma Gandhi called Hindi the language of the masses. The Father of the Nation also talked about making Hindi the national language of the nation.

What is the history of Hindi Diwas?

The Constituent Assembly of India accepted Hindi as the official language of India on September 14, 1949.

Officially, the first Hindi Day was celebrated on September 14, 1953. The reason behind adopting Hindi as one of the official languages was to simplify administration in a nation with multiple languages.

What is the significance of Hindi Diwas?

Every year, Hindi Diwas is celebrated to promote the language. In order to promote Hindi, it is advised to use Hindi in place of English in all government offices.

Many literary and cultural events are organised on this day across the nation, wherein people celebrate great works of Hindi literature. Rajbhasha Kirti Puraskar and Rajbhasha Gaurav Puraskar awards are also given to ministries, departments, public sector units (PSUs), nationalised banks and citizens on Hindi Diwas for their contribution and promotion of Hindi.

Meanwhile, many schools and colleges also organise various literary and cultural programmes. This highlights the importance of the day and raises awareness about the language.
