One can’t imagine Holi without colours. However, one could see the drastic shift of natural colours with chemical-based synthetic ones and there are two reasons behind that- easy to get in the market and much cheaper in price.

However, while using artificial colours, one forgets the impact it will create on the environment. Hence it is important to go natural and opt for organic colours because by doing so, you are also protecting yourself from harsh chemicals.

One can make natural colours at home too by using the ingredients easily available in the kitchen or in your garden

Yellow: This colour can be easily made by mixing turmeric powder with gram flour in a 1:2 ratio to make a dry gulal. One can also crush yellow coloured flowers, like marigold or yellow chrysanthemums and combine them in water to obtain wet colours.

Red:  This colour can easily be achieved by red hibiscus flowers. Take properly dried hibiscus or China rose flowers and then grate them into a fine powder and you can get wet red colour by boiling peel of a pomegranate.

Green: Green coloured gulal can be made using henna or Mehendi powder. spinach or neem will give you wet green colour.

Magenta: You will also agree that beetroot is a good source of red/pink pigment. You can soak sliced beetroots in water, boil the mixture and leave it overnight.
