Voting
count in five states which underwent elections between February 10 and March 7
will take place on March 10, three days after the final phase of polling ended.

Uttar
Pradesh
, Punjab, Manipur, Goa and Uttarakhand are the states which underwent
polling.

Results of 690 assembly constituencies are at stake, 403 of which are in Uttar
Pradesh alone.

As
the election results are impending, Opoyi takes a look at the magic figure to
form the government in each of these five states.

Uttar Pradesh

The
Uttar Pradesh assembly has 403 seats. A party or coalition needs 202 seats for
a majority.

In
the 2017 UP assembly elections, the BJP won 312 out of a
total of 403 seats. 

Punjab

There
are 117 assembly constituencies in Punjab. In order to form a government in the
state of Punjab, parties need to have 59 or more number seats. The magic figure
in the 117-member Punjab Assembly is 59.

In
the 2017 Assembly polls in the state, Congress won an absolute majority by
winning 77 seats and ousted the SAD-BJP government which had been in power for
10 years.

Manipur           

In
the northeastern state of Manipur, 60 assembly constituencies are there. For a
party or coalition to form the government needs 31 seats.

In
the 2017 assembly elections, Nongthombam Biren Singh was sworn as the Chief
Minister, having formed a coalition with the National People’s Party (4), Naga
People’s Front (4) and the Lok Janshakti Party (1). This marked the first time
that the Bharatiya Janata Party (21) has formed a government in Manipur. The
Indian National Congress remained the single largest party in the legislature,
having won 28 seats.

Goa

In the 40-seat Goa assembly, a
party or coalition needs 21 seats to form the government. In the 2017 assembly
elections, Congress emerged as the single largest party, having won 17 seats.
But BJP formed a coalition government with its 13 MLAs, 3 Goa Forward Party
MLAs, 3 Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party MLAs, and 3 Independents MLAs.

Uttarakhand

There
are 70 seats in the Uttarakhand assembly elections. In order to form a
government in the state of Uttarakhand, parties need to have 36 seats. In the
2017 elections, the BJP-led NDA coalition formed the government. BJP alone won
57 seats while Congress won only 11 seats.
