Hyderabad police on Friday arrested an 18-year-old in connection with the alleged gang-rape of a 17-year-old girl in a car in an upscale neighbourhood in the city last Saturday.

Deputy Police Commissioner Joel Davis announced the arrest in a press conference on Friday night, adding that the police had investigated CCTV footage and had evidence against another 18-year-old and three other juveniles in connection with the case.

TOI reported that upon examining the footage, police saw the victim with the five accused outside a Jubilee Hills pub getting into a Mercedes Benz. The group subsequently went to a Banjara Hills bakery at around 6.30pm, following which the girl got into a Toyota Innova with the accused, in which she was later raped in turns.

The Telegraph further reported, citing Davis, that one of the juveniles was indeed the son a prominent person as initial reports had suggested, but added that the son of an MLA was not among the five suspects as per available evidence as he had separated from the party at the bakery.

While the police have identified one juvenile and are waiting to take him into custody, the other accused in the case would be apprehended within 48 hours, the deputy commissioner further told the media.

News of the incident emerged on Friday after the victim’s father lodged a complaint with the police after noticing injuries around his daughter’s neck after she returned from a night out at the pub.

While the girl had initially told the cops that she had been assaulted at the bar, she recalled the true extent of the incident after being comforted by women officers.

Subsequently, the police lodged a case against the five accused under the provisions of IPC section 376D (gang rape) and the POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act.
