After heavy rain in Hyderabad last evening, many areas in the city remain flooded. The city received 10-12 cm of rainfall between 8:30 pm and 11 pm, which led to flooding in low-lying areas and rainwater entering homes in several places. “Two people have been reported missing after they were swept away by the strong currents in low-lying areas,” officials said.

News agency ANI shared a video that features a flooded restaurant in the Old City. The customers can be seen sitting and having food with their ankles covered in floodwater.

Other residents also shared some videos. Some of them showed cars parked at lanes floating and being swept away in areas where the currents were stronger.

Due to the heavy rainfall, eight flights were diverted to nearby cities. Among those, six to Bengaluru and one each to Vijayawada and Chennai were diverted.

A man was swept away by the currents in Chintalkunta. However, he was later reported to be safe.

“Others have been reported missing in Vanasthalipuram,” a police official said.

“Two persons have been washed away after nullahs overflowed due to heavy rains. Rescue team searching for them,” senior police officer K Purushottam told ANI.

The Enforcement, Vigilance and Disaster (EVDM) wing of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) issued an alert on Twitter, asking people to take precautions during their commute.

“Heavy rainfall is expected to continue over the city. Monsoon emergency teams are on the field. Citizens are advised to stay indoors unless needed. Dial @GHMCOnline control room on 040-21111111, 040-29555500 for any rain-related issues and assistance,” GHMC mayor Vijayalaxami Gadwal said in a tweet.

According to Telangana Today, “Friday’s downpour in the IT hub was “sudden and very heavy,” and, in addition to waterlogging, led to severe traffic disruption across all the major thoroughfares. In company of strong winds and thunder, showers lashed almost all areas under the GHMC, as well as those within Medchal-Malkajgiri and Rangareddy districts,” the report noted.
