Mehbooba Mufti, former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, on Tuesday tweeted that she had been placed under house arrest adding that this was contrary to what the administration had been claiming. Restrictions were imposed in the Valley after the death of separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani on September 1.

“GOI expresses concern for the rights of Afghan people but wilfully denies the same to Kashmiris. I’ve been placed under house arrest today because according to admin the situation is far from normal in Kashmir. This exposes their fake claims of normalcy,” the PDP chief tweeted on Tuesday.

Mufti, who shared power with the BJP in 2018, tweeted a photo of his house, locked from outside with an armoured car posted there.

Restrictions have been in place in the Valley for the past five days after the death of the 92-year-old leader as police tried to first prevent a big show for his funeral and later to prevent exhumation of his body from the Hyderpora graveyard. There were intelligence inputs that people may try to take his body to the Eidgah Martyrs’ graveyard in the old city.

All roads leading towards Eidgah and Hyderpora were barricaded and drones used to maintain overhead vigil around these areas.  Elsewhere in the city, normal life was affected due to the restrictions as markets were partially open.

Online classes remained suspended due to suspension of internet services on mobile devices.  Internet services are currently available on broadband and fiber platforms only in the valley.

The police added that its officers were made to wait for three hours at the separatist leader’s home when they went there for his burial after his death. The family resorted to anti-national activities “probably under pressure from Pakistan and miscreants”, they added.

Refuting rumours that the separatist leader was not  given a proper burial, the Jammu and Kashmir Police released four videos through its twitter handle to show that Geelani was laid to rest as per the rituals in the intervening night of September 1 and 2.
