Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is in poll-bound Assam as part of his election campaign. Rahul Gandhi interacted with college students in Dibrugarh and asked them to “actively participate” in politics. He also assured that Congress will ensure that the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) is not implemented in Assam if the party comes to power.

“You think democracy is declining. Youth is unemployed, farmers are protesting, CAA is there. We can’t ask the people of Assam to forget their culture, language if they come to Delhi. One force, born in Nagpur, trying to control the whole country,” he said, ANI reported.

“Democracy means-voice of Assam should control Assam. If we don’t include students then there can be no democracy. Youth should actively participate in politics&fight for Assam when you feel State is being robbed. You’ll have to fight with love not with stones, lathis,” he added.

CAA was passed by the Parliament of India in 2019. The law grants citizenship to persecuted non-Muslims of Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh seeking refuge in India. The cut-off date of which would be December 31, 2014.

During the rally, Rahul Gandhi also accused BJP of “selling hatred to divide people”.

Later in the day, the Congress leader is expected to attend the tea estate workers rally in Dinjoy and also address a public meeting in Doom Dooma.

“Looking forward to meeting you all in Assam! Together let’s defeat the forces that seek to divide us and join hands to build a strong, united, peaceful and prosperous Assam,” Rahul Gandhi posted on Telegram on Thursday.

The 2021 Assam Assembly elections 2021 will be taking place in three phases, starting March 27 and the counting will take place on May 2.
