Remaining T20Is matches of India vs England cricket series being played in Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi stadium will now be continue without live audience due to rising COVID-19 cases in India, Gujarat Cricket Association vice-president Dhanraj Nathwani said on Monday.

According to a Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) press release, the third, fourth and fifth matches of the series scheduled to be played on March 16,18 and 20, respectively will be played without audience at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

The association further added that the refund for the previously purchased tickets will be made to the audience.

“Due to rise in the number of Corona cases, we at GCA have decided in consultation with BCCI, the matches will be played closed door,” Nathwani said.

The decision has been taken in view of surging COVID-19 cases, as the first two games at the world’s largest cricket stadium had witnessed a crowd of more than 60,000, raising concerns about the safety and protocols in place to avoid contraction of the virus.

The newly built Naredra Modi stadium can accommodate 1.32 lakh spectators but is allowed to capacitate only 50% of the total space at the previous two matches due to COVID-19 emergency. 

India on Monday recorded over 25,000 new coronavirus cases and 118 virus related deaths which took nation’s COVID-19 tally to 1,13,85,339.
