India recorded 1,15,736 new cases of COVID-19, Union Health Ministry’s data released on Wednesday showed. 630 people died of the disease in the past 24 hours. With the fresh cases, the country’s coronavirus tally has reached 1,28,01,785, while the death toll has risen to 1,66,177.

There are 8,43,473 active cases in the country, while 1,17,92,135 have recovered.

25,14,39,598 samples have been tested for the novel coronavirus till April 6, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said. This includes 12,08,329 samples tested on Tuesday.

India started its inoculation drive against the disease on January 16. Citizens are being vaccinated with either of the two vaccines, Covaxin and Covishield, approved by the country.

8,31,10,926 people have received at least one dose of either of the two vaccines till Tuesday.

On Sunday, India saw a massive surge in the daily number of COVID-19 cases, when the number crossed the 1,00,000-mark for the first time since the pandemic began. The country recorded 1,03,558 new virus cases, the Health Ministry’s data released on Monday showed.
