India reported 38,948 new COVID-19 cases and 219 deaths in the last 24 hours, according to the Union health ministry. The number of active cases in the country currently stands at 4,04,874. A total of 43, 903 people recovered from the disease in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of recoveries to 3,21,81,995. With 219 deaths, India’s COVID-19 death toll rose to 4,40,572. 

The total number of vaccinations rose to 68,75, 41,762 after 25,23,089 vaccine doses were administered between Sunday and Monday. 

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), a total of 53,14,68,867 samples have been tested for COVID-19 till September 5, 2021. Of these, 14, 10, 649 samples were tested in the last 24 hours.

Kerala continues to lead the chart in new infections. The southern state reported 26,701 fresh COVID-19 cases and 74 deaths. Test positivity rate (TPR) in Kerala is at 17.17%.

India’s daily COVID-19 count remained largely unchanged from the previous seven days’ tally even as infections in Kerala hit a 16-week high of over 2 lakh. India reported its lowest weekly death toll from COVID-19 in 23 weeks.

The total number of coronavirus fatalities this week was 2,533. This is the first time the weekly death toll has fallen below 3,000 since the March 29 to April 4 week.

Meanwhile, Mumbai has once again started to lead Maharashtra’s COVID chart and is now among the top five districts. These five districts contribute to 72% cases in Maharashtra. 

COVID-19 cases in Mumbai had fallen to the 200s in the last week of August. But now, the weekly positivity rate has also reported a rise: 2.71% on the week ending September 4 against 2.58% during the last week of August. Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has once again appealed to the public to avoid crowding or any activity that puts people at risk.
