India’s COVID-19 infection tally climbed up by 1,778 on Wednesday, bringing the total to 4,30,12,749. The number of active cases in the country declined by over 800 and currently stand at 23,087, according to media reports citing data from the Union Health Ministry.

The death toll has climbed to 5,16,605 with 62 new fatalities being reported in the last 24 hours, the data updated at 8 am showed.

The active cases constitute 0.05% of the total infections, while the country’s COVID-19 recovery rate was recorded at 98.75%, the health ministry said.

A reduction of 826 cases has been recorded in the active COVID-19 caseload in the last 24 hours.

The daily positivity rate was recorded at 0.26% and weekly positivity rate was also recorded at 0.36%, according to the health ministry.

The latest 24 hours saw a total of 6,77,218 COVID-19 tests being conducted. India has so far cumulatively conducted over 78.42 crore tests.

The number of people who have recuperated from the disease rose to 4,24,73,057, while the case fatality rate was recorded at 1.20%.

The cumulative doses of in the country so far under the nationwide COVID vaccination drive has exceeded 181.89 crore.

COVID-19 cases have been rising on the global scale once again. AFP reported that France had seen a 35% weekly increase in cases while the UK and Italy have seen a 42% weekly uptick. The current increase in COVID-19 cases globally are just the “tip of the iceberg”, the World Health Organization said in a statement earlier this month.

The new wave of infections is linked to the omicron variant’s BA2 subtype. The BA2 subtype is said to be even more transmissible than the original Omicron variant. The surge in cases comes at a time when many countries in Europe have let go of the last pandemic curbs. UK and France have loosened most of its restrictions over the last few weeks.
