Anvee Bhutani, an Indian-origin student from Magdalen College under
the University of Oxford, has been elected as the Student Union President
at the end of a by election. Bhutani, who is Co-Chair Campaign for Racial Awareness
and Equality (CRAE) at the student’s union, was a candidate in the 2021-2022 election,
PTI reports.

According to the student newspaper ‘Cherwell’, Bhutani, through her
electoral manifesto, highlighted the salient points of previous campaigns held for the
implementation of Oxford living wage and making the university curriculum more
diverse.

“Use suggestions from student campaigns to work with initiatives
like the Oxford and Colonialism hub to push for a more diverse
curriculum,” PTI referred to her election manifesto as saying.

“Lobby for more funding towards existing mental health support
programs including for graduate students; work towards more access and lower
wait times for university counselling services,” it read.

The byelection, as per the report, had the highest-ever voter turnout till
date, with 2,506 people going out to vote, amounting to a 146% increase from
the last byelection held in 2019.

The contest also had the biggest ever pool of candidates so far, with
a total of 11 aiming to become the next Oxford Students Union President.
