An Indian student died in a hospital in Ukraine while undergoing treatment for a stroke, CNN-News18 reported.

Chandan Jindal, 22, was a student at the Vinnytsia National Pyrogov, Memorial Medical University in Ukraine’s Vinnytsia. He had been admitted to the ICU unit in the Emergency Hospital after suffering an ischemic stroke in the brain around a month ago. He died on Wednesday.

Jindal’s father, who was at the hospital, is now trying to reach the Siret border of Romania with his son’s body, CNN-News18 reported citing sources. He has also written to the Indian government to help bring back his son’s body to his home country, the report stated.

Jindal’s father and uncle had travelled to Ukraine on February 7 after the student had fallen sick on February 2 and had to undergo surgery, NDTV reported.

The news of his passing comes a day after India’s first causality in the Russian attack of neighbouring Ukraine was confirmed. Naveen Shekharappa, who was studying medicine at the Kharkiv National Medical University, was killed due to shelling in Kharkiv.

The 21-year-old, like many other Indians stuck in Ukraine, had moved to a bunker for safety. He died of the missile attack while waiting in a queue outside a grocery store. 

Indian students in Ukraine have been desperately seeking evacuation. Videos circulating on social media show them in difficult conditions at railway stations, border posts and bunkers, NDTV reported.

Meanwhile, an urgent advisory from the Indian embassy in Ukraine on Wednesday urged nationals to leave Kharkiv immediately. The call to move came amid heavy shelling in Ukraine’s second-largest city.

Nearly 16,000 Indian students are still stranded in Ukraine. A total of 1,377 citizens were brought back to India in the last 24 hours. “Six flights have now departed for India in the last 24 hours, includes the first flights from Poland. Carried back 1,377 more Indian nationals from Ukraine,” Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar tweeted today.    

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed the nation’s focus is on the safety and swift evacuation of all Indians in Ukraine. To that end, he has spoken to both presidents Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Vladimir Putin of Ukraine and Russia, respectively to take stock of the situation.
