Mumbai City FC recorded their first win in the Indian Super League (ISL) on Wednesday with an injury-time penalty converted by striker Adam Le Fondre to secure a 1-0 win over FC Goa.

Despite playing much of the game with a man-advantage, following Radeem Tlang’s first-half red card, Mumbai City could not force an opener thanks to Goa’s deep defending, PTI reported.

With the gaming seeming to be petering out to a goalless draw, but a penalty decision at the death helped ensure Sergio Lobera prevailed over his former side at the Fatorda Stadium.

Lobera fielded three changes to the side that lost to NorthEast United in their opening fixture.

Nigerian striker Bartholomew Ogbeche and Mohamad Rakip were left out from the squad and Ahmed Jahouh was suspended following his red card in the previous match.

They were replaced by Amey Ranawde, Cy Goddard and Mourtada Fall.

For FC Goa, left-back Saviour Gama returned to the starting eleven, with Tlang and Alberto Noguera replacing Princeton Rebello and Jorge Ortiz.

Goa had the first notable chance of the match, with Igor Angulo, who scored a brace against Bengaluru FC in their last outing, failing to control a low cross drilled in by Noguera.

Mumbai, meanwhile, made incursions into the final third from their right flank through Le Fondre, but they were unable to register a shot on target in the first half.

In the 40th minute, Goa were dealt a huge blow as Tlang was given his marching orders for a two-footed tackle on Hernan Santana.

However, the Gaurs started brightly in the second half, and almost took the lead with Angulo’s narrowly-wide effort.

Mumbai full back Mandar Rao Dessai then had a great opportunity to take the lead with less than 15 minutes to play. Le Fondre’s drilled shot across the goal was met by Dessai, who could only manage to blast his shot over the post.

After a spell of continued pressure, the Gaurs finally cracked as Mumbai were awarded a penalty in the fifth minute of stoppage time, after Lenny Rodrigues was adjudged to have handled Bipin Singh’s header.

Le Fondre made no mistake from 12 yards out, with his powerful shot giving Goa goalkeeper Mohammad Nawaz helpless, despite guessing the correct direction.

The Gaurs will next be in action on November 30, then they take on NorthEast United, while Mumbai City will face East Bengal on December 1.
