M Venkaiah Naidu, India’s Vice President, tested positive for COVID-19, according to a social media post from the Vice President Secretariat. He is currently in Hyderabad and has decided to remain in self-isolation for a week.

The tweet read, “The Vice President, Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu, who is in Hyderabad, tested COVID positive today. He has decided to remain in self-isolation for a week. He has advised all those who came in contact with him to isolate themselves and get tested.”

With a 10-day isolation period, PTI reported that Vice President Naidu will most likely not attend the Republic Day celebrations on January 26 in New Delhi.

According to reports from Hindustan Times, Vice President Venkaiah Naidu paid his tributes to Subhash Chandra Bose in Hyderabad on his birth anniversary. 

“He personified selfless devotion to the cause of motherland” Vice President Naidu said in a statement. He added, “The entire nation fondly remembers and salutes the legendary leader on Parakram Divas today.

More than fresh 4,000 cases of COVID-19 were recorded in the state of Telangana– where the Vice President is currently– on Saturday.

Meanwhile, India reported 3,33,533 new COVID cases, 525 deaths, and 2,59,168 recoveries in the last 24 hours, according to data updated by the health ministry on Sunday.   

An increase of 73,840 cases has been recorded in the active COVID-19 caseload in a span of 24 hours. The cumulative doses administered in the country so far under the nationwide COVID-19 vaccination drive has exceeded 161.92 crore. India’s COVID-19 tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7, 2020, 30 lakh on August 23, 40 lakh on September 5 and 50 lakh on September 16, PTI reported.
