After the Nigerian government banned the microblogging website Twitter in the nation, it has now made its account by the name of ‘Government of Nigeria’ on India’s homegrown app, Koo. Aprameya Radhakrishna, CEO of Koo, on Thursday, posted a tweet on Twitter welcoming the Nigerian government’s account on Koo and posted a screenshot of the same.

Last week, the Nigerian Government banned Twitter in the country after the microblogging website deleted a tweet having a remark of President Muhammad Buhari, a move that triggered an international outcry over freedom of expression.

Now, Bombinate Technologies-owned Koo, which is being called an Indian alternative of Twitter that is getting into battles with governments around the world over privacy issues and technology rules, has reached overseas.

A user named ‘Government of Nigeria’ surfaced on the Koo website on Thursday and it has an orange-yellow tick mark, which shows the account as “verified”. The official id of the Nigerian government has now nearly 10,000 followers.

After the Twitter ban in Nigeria, Mr Radhakrishna on June 5 tweeted saying that the Koo team is thinking of enabling local languages in Nigeria.
