Delhi Capitals pacer Ishant Sharma has been ruled out of the current edition of the Indian Premier League owing to a rib cage injury he endured during a training session.

The franchise spend Rs 1.10 crore for the lanky Delhi pacer in the auctions last year. The management backed Ishant’s services with the white ball, given he is predominantly considered only in Indian whites.

However, Sharma goes home wicketless from the IPL, having played only one game. Against Sunrisers Hyderabad the 32-year-old gave away 26 runs in Abu Dhabi.

“Fast bowler Ishant Sharma experienced an acute episode of left rib cage pain while bowling at a team training session on October 7, 2020 in Dubai. Subsequent investigations revealed that he sustained a left internal oblique muscle tear. This injury will unfortunately rule him out of the remainder of the IPL,” Capitals said in a statement.

Delhi Capitals lost their first spot on the points table to Mumbai Indians yesterday, when the defending champions thrashed Iyer and company by 5 wickets. Capitals now have 10 points in seven games, trailing Mumbai only by net run rate.

Ishant, who has played 97 Tests, 80 ODIs and 14 T20Is for India, will hope not to lose his place in the Indian squad when they tour Australia later this year. The pacer’s participation Down Under will now depend on how his rehabilitation program goes.

Delhi Capitals play Rajasthan Royals on Wednesday.
