Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises broke the bank for all-rounders and fast bowlers at the player auction, held in Chennai on Thursday, with South Africa’s Chris Morris fetching a record sum of Rs 16.25 crore. A total of 57 players were sold for over Rs 145 crore as franchises looked to bolster their squads ahead of the 14th edition of the cricket extravaganza.

The auction started off with Australian batting stalwart Steve Smith being sold to the Delhi Capitals for Rs 2.2 crore, a deal that could turn out to be one of the bargains of the year. The Royal Challengers Bangalore then broke the bank to sign Smith’s compatriot, batting all-rounder Glenn Maxwell for Rs 14.25 crore.

However, bowling all-rounder Morris made history after his services were acquired by the Rajasthan Royals for a record sum of Rs 16.25 crore, edging the Rs 16 crore the erstwhile Delhi Daredevils paid for Yuvraj Singh in 2015.
