Royal
Challengers Bangalore
(RCB) became the first franchise to score 200 + in IPL
2022
, but they failed to defend their score (205 for 2) against Punjab Kings on
Sunday. Batting first, RCB got off to a flying start from their newly appointed
captain Faf du Plessis who scored 88 off 57 balls with the help of seven sixes
and three boundaries, but PBKS’s depth in the batting order enabled them to
chase down the target with ease.

But
this is not the first time RCB lost a match after posting 205 on board. In the
history of IPL, the Bengaluru side scored 205 five times and they lost four
times. Apart from Du Plessis, Virat Kohli scored 41 off 29 balls and Dinesh
Karthik scored 32 off 14 balls.

In reply to the mammoth target, PBKS got off to a brilliant start and the duo of captain Mayank Agarwal,
Shikhar Dhawan wreaked havoc on the Bengaluru bowlers. Captain Mayank Agarwal
scored 32 off 24 balls, while Shikhar Dhawan scored 43 off 29 balls. Bhanuka
Rajapaksa also scored 43 off 22 balls. But the real game for Punjab was overturned
by Odien Smith and Shahrukh Khan.

In
fact, when Punjab needed 44 runs in the last 24 balls, Odine Smith missed the
catch in the same over. After this, Punjab Kings needed 36 runs off 18 balls. In the 18th over itself, Odien Smith scored a lot of runs and scored
25 runs. Odigne hit 3 sixes and a four in the over. In the same over, Punjab’s
victory was confirmed and in the end, Shah Rukh Khan also made the team
victorious by 5 wickets by hitting a six, a four.

It
is a unique record, though came in a losing cause. RCB managed to defend the
206 runs target only once in the past.

RCB,
who are yet to win the IPL title, is playing under new captain Du Plessis after
Kohli stepped down from the captaincy in September 2021. RCB, despite having
one of the best batting attacks, failed to win the IPL in the last 14 seasons.

This
season, the franchise has brought in several new players but the bowling looked
weak yet again, with renowned pacer Mohammed Siraj going for plenty in the
first match itself. Even the likes of Harshal Patel and Wanindu Hasaranga
failed to put in a good show.
