Legendary
Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar is impressed with Chennai Super Kings batter
Ruturaj Gaikwad’s progress as a batter. The former India skipper, Gavaskar said
the right-handed batter has ‘very little areas to improve’ and his ‘shot
selection’ is the ‘most impressive aspect’ of his batting.

In
IPL 2021, Gaikwad, 25, was instrumental to CSK’s fourth title triumph.
Scoring 635 runs, he won the Orange Cap and was rewarded for such a stellar
performance with a call-up in the Indian limited-overs squad.

“Ruturaj
Gaikwad is another player who has very little areas to improve. There is
nothing really required as far as Gaikwad’s improvement is concerned. He has
got all the shots in the book, but the most impressive aspect is his shot
selection. Whatever shot he plays, he doesn’t get cowed down,” Gavaskar
said the Star Sports show ‘Gameplan’.

“He
is not afraid to play the lofted shot when required and his shot selection has
been very good in the IPL. So, there is very little that Ruturaj Gaikwad needs
to do. All he needs to do is keep on scoring runs similar to last season.”

CSK
will start their IPL title defence on Saturday against Kolkata Knight Riders in
the IPL 2022 season opener at the Wankhede Stadium.

Meanwhile,
on Thursday MS Dhoni stepped down as CSK captain and handed over the baton to
all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja just ahead of the new season.

“MS
Dhoni has decided to hand over the leadership of Chennai Super Kings and picked
Ravindra Jadeja to lead the team,” said CSK in a statement. “Jadeja, who has
been an integral part of Chennai Super Kings since 2012, will only be the third
player to lead CSK. Dhoni will continue to represent Chennai Super Kings this
season and beyond.”

CSK,
under the leadership of Dhoni, won four IPL titles which made them the second
most successful team in the T20 league history.

Dhoni,
who retired from international cricket in 2020, is likely to hang his boots
from IPL after the end of the season, but he will remain associated with CSK
taking up a role.
