Mumbai Indians (MI) will face newcomers Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday, April 24 in their quest for their maiden win in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 season.

Five-time champions MI have yet to win a game this season, leaving them at the bottom of the IPL 2022 Points Table, while their opponents LSG have won four games with only three defeats.

MS Dhoni threw back the years to take Chennai Super Kings (CSK) over the line in a thrilling last-ball conclusion in MI’s last game. Tilak Varma struck an undefeated half-century to help MI record a total of 155/7 after an inspired Mukesh Choudhary (3/19) knocked back their top order early.

With a very impressive bowling performance, Daniel Sams (4/30) gave MI hope of an unexpected win, but Jaydev Unadkat failed to defend 17 runs in the penultimate over as Dhoni sealed victory with 6, 4, 2, and 4 off the last four balls.

MI will be hoping that Sams’ form and Riley Meredith’s performance against CSK can be maintained so that Jasprit Bumrah can receive some much-needed support. Hritik Shokeen, a debutant, also contributed with economical figures of 0/23 from four overs and a respectable 25 runs.

LSG, on the other hand, comes into this game coming off an 18-run loss to Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). Faf du Plessis smashed 94 off 64 balls to propel RCB to a commanding total of 181/6. KL Rahul (30) provided a decent start, and Krunal Pandya quickly added 42 off 28 balls, but LSG were eventually bowled out by Josh Hazlewood (4/25).

However, Rahul (103*) produced an undefeated century as LSG posted 199/4 after being asked to bat the last time these two sides met. Avesh Khan (3/30) then excelled with the ball as MI’s openers struggled again, and their middle-order could only power them to 181/9, falling short by 18 runs.

In the previous game, Mumbai made three changes, with Meredith and Shokeen making their debuts and Sams returning to the starting XI. All three players performed admirably and should keep their positions. However, Jaydev Unadkat leaked runs in the previous game, and his status could be in jeopardy.

Lucknow may have lost the last game, but they have a well-balanced playing XI and should choose an unchanged lineup for this encounter.

The final game at Wankhede Stadium was a high-scoring thriller in which both RR and DC recorded season-high totals of 222/2 and 207/8, falling short by only 15 runs. The small boundaries enable batsmen to try for huge strokes, and the Mumbai Indians will be hungry to dominate on their home ground.
