Pandit Birju Maharaj, India’s legendary Kathak dancer, died at the age of 83 due to a reported heart attack on Monday. The news has sent social media into mourning. 

The veteran dancer’s grandson Swaransh’s Mishra wrote in a post on Instagram, “With profound grief and sorrow we inform the sad and untimely demise of our most beloved member of the family Pt. Birju Maharaj Ji. The noble soul left for his heavenly abode on 17th January 2022.”

Bollywood actor and famed dancer Adnan Sami wrote on Twitter remembering Pandit Birju Maharaj, “We have lost an unparalleled institution in the field of the performing arts. He has influenced many generations through his genius.” 

One fan shared a post with the dancer’s photos and wrote, “It’s a big loss of matchless institution and symbol of national treasure. He continues to remain beyond any explanation. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”

General Vijay Kumar Singh, former Chief of Army Staff, described the veteran artist’s death as “painful.” He wrote, “The news of the death of Pandit Brijmohan Mishra, popularly known as Pandit Birju Maharaj, is painful.”

He added, “He was instrumental in making Indian arts famous all over the world. He connected the Indian youth with dance and classical music. An era has come to an end with them.”

A close follower of the legendary dancer wrote, “Heartfelt tributes to Pt Birju Maharaj who passed away at the age of 83. He was not just legendary but a legend, not just an artist but an institution, a national treasure, a celestial dancer, the foremost exponent of Kathak.”

Media reports suggest that Pandit Birju Maharaj was taken to the hospital on Sunday after his health started deteriorating. He was playing with his grandchildren late Sunday night, NDTV reported.

The veteran dancer was diagnosed with kidney disease a few days ago and was receiving treatment.
