KBC Offline Quiz: How do cold-blooded animals get heat?

Through gills

Laying eggs

From the sea

From their surroundings

Answers: From their surroundings

Animals with a cold blood do not keep a consistent body temperature. They acquire their heat from the outside world, hence their body temperature varies depending on the weather. If it’s 50 degrees outdoors, their body temperature will drop to 50 degrees as well. If the temperature rises to 100 degrees Fahrenheit, their body temperature will rise to 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Except for birds and mammals, the majority of the animal kingdom is cold-blooded.

In most cases, an organism’s size and form determine whether it is warm-blooded or cold-blooded. Consider elephants, whales, and walruses, for example.

Because their volume is so huge, relying on the outside environment to heat them would be pretty wasteful, slowing their response times and potentially jeopardising their life. As a result, practically every large animal is warm-blooded.
