KBC Offline Quiz (November 26, 2021): The ‘Scorched Earth’ policy in Java was followed by whom?

Japanese

British

French

Dutch

Answer: Dutch

The Scorched
Earth policy is an extreme warfare strategy that involves quite literally “scorching”
whatever remains on a particular piece of land. This is done so that the enemy cannot
use anything that might be useful for an attack against the other army.

The Dutch followed
this strategy to stop the Japanese from using wood and timber in their own war.

The policy devastates
entire masses of nature, wildlife, food and resources.

The Soviets
also used this strategy against the Germans, by scorching and destroying
bridges, crops and factories. Ancient Romans, Greeks and Armenians have also
used this military strategy.

American
Civil war US Army general William Tecumseh Sherman said that the scorched earth
policy is the best way to win a war as it completely nullifies the enemy’s
ability to even wage a war.

In a war against
the Japanese, the Dutch destroyed mills and burned huge amounts of wood logs to
save themselves against a Japanese attack.

This extreme
policy has devastating repercussions for the civilian population left behind.
People die, lose access to basic needs like food and shelter.

The term “scorched
earth” is often used in business terminology as well, to make a company seem
extremely unattractive to a potential acquirer.
