KBC Offline Quiz (December 3, 2021): What do we call the area where a game of ice hockey is played?

Ice course

Ice field

Ice rink

None of the above

Answer: Ice rink

The word ‘rink’ is a
Scottish word that means ‘course’. An ice rink is a frozen water body, or a hardened
platform used for ice skating or winter sports like ice hockey.

New York’s Rockefeller
center is one of the most popular ice rinks in the world, featuring in many Hollywood
shows like Gossip Girl, and movies like Home Alone.

Ice rinks can be
natural or man-made. In natural ice rinks, a body of water is frozen naturally
due to low temperatures. An artificial ice rink is an ice rink created through
coolants, that chemically freeze a water body. Synthetic ice rinks made from
plastic are also widely used.

In the 1840s, ice rinks
were made from a mixture of ice, salts and the fatty tissue of pigs. Even
though this was convenient, customers got tired of it, especially due to the smelly
pig component of the rink.

Three decades later, the
process of refrigeration came to the picture, and the first artificially frozen
rink was introduced. Named as Glaciarium, the rink was created inside a small
building in London, on 7 January 1876.

Ice hockey is a popular
sport in US and Canada. The National Hockey League is a professional league of
32 teams, with 25 US teams and 7 Canadian teams.
