Any of a group of sound-producing insects (order Homoptera) with two pairs of membrane wings, prominent compound eyes, and three simple eyes (family Cicadidae) (ocelli). Cicadas are medium to large in size, measuring 2 to 5 centimetres in length (0.8 to 2 inches). Vibrating membranes (tymbals) near the base of the abdomen produce loud noises in male cicadas. Although some species’ “song” is melodious, most North American cicadas make rhythmical ticks, buzzes, or whines. Female cicadas lay their eggs in woody plant tissues, which fall off the plant as the eggs hatch or soon after. Newly born nymphs burrow into the ground and feed on the fluids of perennial plant roots. During the years it takes for a nymph to mature, it normally goes through five moults. Although the females are not normally considered pests, if they are in large numbers, they can cause damage to young saplings during egg laying. Cicadas come in over 3,000 different species. Cicadas belong to the family Cicadidae and are tropical, occurring in deserts, grasslands, and woodlands, with the exception of two species of hairy cicadas in the family Tettigaretidae that are exclusively found in southeastern Australia, including Tasmania. There are other periodic cicadas, in addition to the yearly dog-day cicada (Tibicen and others) that occurs in midsummer. The 17-year cicada (also known as the 17-year locust) and the 13-year cicada are two of the most fascinating and well-known (Magicicada). These species can be found in huge numbers in geographically and chronologically separated broods.
