The
families of Mynamar’s Chin National Army (CNA), the armed wing of Chin National Front
has sought shelter in India’s Mizoram in the wake of the military coup in the neighboring
country, PTI reported citing a state official on Wednesday. The insurgent armed group of Myanmar has asked for asylum for 40 families, District deputy commissioner of Mizoram’s Champhai, Maria CT Zuali told PTI.

Adding that the matter along with necessary information has been passed on to the district’s administration, Zuali said, “the CNA has communicated the matter to the village council president of Farkawn.”

Meanwhile,
an alert to curb a flash influx of refugees from  Myanmar as a consequence of the armed coup has been issued in the district, informed Indian state officials.

The notification issued by Mizoram authorities on Tuesday instructed all villages to inform the
district administration if Myanmarese refugees are seen entering their areas.

The concerns came at the backdrop of military power establishment in Mynamar last week after a 10-year experiment with democracy, with ex-general assuming the role of President and army chief Min Aung Hlaing being handed over the “legislative, judicial and executive powers.”

Mizoram,
which is becoming a go to shelter for refugees from the military run state,
shares a 404 km porous international border with Myanmar.

The prime reason behind seeking refuge in Mizoram roots back to the late 1980s when a number of people from Myanmar’s Chin community fled to the northeastern state of India.

While many of them had returned to Myanmar after democracy was restored, thousands of them chose to stay here and are still living in the state.

The
Chins of Myanmar and the Mizos of India are believed to share the same ancestry and culture.
