Kithore assembly constituency in Uttar Pradesh was won by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the 2017 state elections. The BJP’s Satyavir Tyagi defeated his closest rival Shahid Manzoor of the Samajwadi Party (SP), who had won the seat since 2002.

Tyagi defeated Manzoor by 10,862 votes as the BJP flattened all opposition in the area towards winning an absolute majority in the state. The party won four out of the five assembly segments in the Meerut Lok Sabha constituency, including Kithore. Only the Meerut assembly seat was won by the Samajwadi Party (SP).

Rajendra Agarwal of the BJP is the current Member of Parliament (MP) from the Meerut Lok Sabha constituency. He has been winning the parliament seat since 2009.

The BJP hopes to retain Uttar Pradesh in this year’s assembly election and win Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath a second straight term, though a performance as powerful as in 2017 is seen as tough.

That year the BJP won a two-thirds majority, bagging 312 seats in the 403-seat UP legislative assembly. It threw the Samajwadi Party out, relegating it to a poor second place with 47 seats.
