Maharashtra government on Tuesday approached the Supreme Court challenging the order given by High Court directing a CBI probe into the corruption allegation against ex-home minister Anil Deshmukh, PTI reported.

“We have filed an appeal on behalf of state government against the Bombay High Court of yesterday,” said Maharashtra standing counsel Sachin Patil.

This comes after the Bombay High Court ordered CBI to conduct a preliminary probe within 15 days into the accusations of corruption and misconduct against Maharashtra former home minister and NCB leader Anil Deshmukh levelled by former Mumbai police commissioner Param Bir Singh.

Deshmukh, a verteran politician of the Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), had on Monday resigned as the home minister of Maharashtra following the High Court’s order.

Ex-police commissioner of Mumbai, Singh, in his plea sought a CBI probe investigation against Deshmukh who, he claimed, had asked police officers, including suspended cop Sachin Waze, to extort Rs 100 crore from bars and restaurants.

Deshmukh, however, has denied any wrongdoing.
