Renowned Malayalam poet Akkitham Achuthan Namboothiri, who received the Indian literary award ‘Jnanpith’ last year, died on Thursday at the age of 94 in Thrissur.

He was also the recipient of several other awards including Padma Shri, Ezhuthachan Award, Kendra Sahitya Akademi Award, Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Poetry, Odakkuzhal Award, Vallathol Award, Vayalar Award and Aasan Prize.  

Namboothiri was well-known for his simple yet intelligent style of writing. The poet penned his first poem when he was only eight. He is also known for his critical essays, short stories and other literary works. His works have been translated into multiple languages.
