England pacer James Anderson became the first fast bowler to take 600 Test wickets during the third Test against Pakistan at Southampton on Tuesday. Only Anil Kumble (619), Shane Warne (708) and Muttiah Muralitharan (800) are ahead of Anderson in the list of highest Test wicket takers in the history of the game.

As soon as Anderson dismissed Pakistan captain Azhar Ali for his 600th wicket, congratulatory messages started pouring in on social media for the English veteran.

However, it was former Pakistan speedster Shoaib Akhtar’s tweet which grabbed immediate attention. Akhtar, who played for Pakistan from 1997 to 2007 taking 178 wickets in 46 Test matches, called Anderson a ‘medium fast bowler’.

“Incredible 600 by @jimmy9. What an amazing achievement. Playing 156 Test Matches for a medium fast bowler is no less achievement. Cheers mate,” Akhtar said in his tweet while tagging Anderson.

Anderson is yet to respond to Akhtar’s message.

The 38-year-old English fast bowler has already set his eyes on 700 Test wickets and believes he can do it.

“I didn’t bowl as well as I’d have liked for the whole summer. But in this Test I was really on it and I feel like I’ve still got stuff to offer this team. As long as I still feel like that I think I’ll keep going. I don’t think I’ve won my last Test matches as an England cricketer yet. Can I reach 700? Why not?” PTI quoted Anderson, as telling ESPNcricinfo.

Anderson added that his hunger to perform keeps him going.

“We’re still in the Test championship. There are still series ahead of us and Test matches to win. That’s all I’m really interested in. I still love turning up every day at training, putting in the hard yards and being in the dressing room with the lads trying to forge a win for England,” he said.
