Meerut assembly constituency has Rafiq Ansari of the Samajwadi Party (SP) taking on Kamal Dutt Sharma of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Ranjan Sharma of the Congress and Imran Ansari of the All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) this year in the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections.
Rafiq Ansari had won the Meerut seat in 2017, though the BJP swept Uttar Pradesh winning 312 of UP’s 403 assembly seats. Ansari had beaten his closest rival Dr Laxmikant Bajpai by a margin of 28,769 votes. Dr Bajpai had contested that election on a BJP ticket.

In 2012, the seat was won by Dr Laxmikant Bajpai of the BJP.
Meerut falls under Meerut district and the Meerut Lok Sabha constituency, which is made up of five assembly seats – four of these are in the Meerut district and one in the Hapur district.

In Meerut, BJP has won five times and SP has won thrice since the 1977 elections.
The Meerut assembly constituency will vote in the first phase of the Uttar Pradesh elections on February 10, 2022, along with 57 other constituencies in 11 districts. Uttar Pradesh will vote in seven rounds, with the last round on March 3.

Results will be declared on March 10, along with those for elections in four other states, including neighbouring Uttarakhand.
