Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor condemned the act of a protesting
farmer hoisting a yellow triangular flag at the Red Fort, saying he supported
the farmers’ protests from the beginning but could not tolerate “lawlessness”,
PTI reported.

Describing the incident as “most unfortunate”, he asserted that only the
sacred ‘tiranga’ should fly aloft the Red Fort on Republic Day.

“Most unfortunate. I have supported the farmers’ protests from the
start but I cannot condone lawlessness. And on #RepublicDay no flag but the
sacred tiranga should fly aloft the Red Fort,” the former Union minister
said on Twitter, in a tweet carrying a video of the incident.

The yellow flag hoisted by the protestors was the ‘Nishan Sahib’, a
symbol of Sikh religion seen at all Gurudwara complexes.

The ‘Nishan Sahib’ is a triangular flag that is sacred to Sikhs. The
emblem on the flag comprises of ‘Khanda’, a two-edged sword, Chakra, a disc,
and two Kirpans that cross each other at the handles.

The other flag appeared to be of a farmer union.

Tens of thousands of farmers with wielding sticks and clubs in one hand
and tricolour and union flags in the other, marched across the national capital
as part of the tractor rally parade. The ‘peaceful’ parade turned violent as
farmers and police clashed, including the use of tear gas and lathicharge on
the farmers.

The farmers laid siege to the Red Fort and climbed the flagpole on
Republic Day.

The farmers’ protest marked its 62nd day on the 72nd
Republic Day of India.
