The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Wednesday invoked the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act against suspended Mumbai Police officer Sachin Waze, who was arrested in the probe in the recovery of explosives from a car near industrialist Mukesh Ambani’s residence in Mumbai last month, reported ANI. Waze on Tuesday was remanded by a Mumbai court in the NIA custody till March 25.

The Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act is a 1967 anti-terror law in India in which a person can be pronounced as a ‘terrorist’ on a few conditions.

Notably, Waze has also been named in businessman Mansukh Hiren’s murder by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS). Hiren was the custodian of the car containing gelatin sticks identified outside Ambani’s house on February 25 and a prime suspect in the case. He was found dead in Retibunder, Mumbra a week later.

Hiren’s wife had said that her husband had given the SUV to Waze in November last year, which the Mumbai crime branch officer returned in the first week of February. Waze has denied this.

On BJP’s demand in the Maharashtra assembly, the NIA took over the probe in the case on March 8.
