NASA%20astronaut%20and%20flight%20engineer%20Kate%20Rubins%20harvested%20the%20first-ever%20radish%20crop%20grown%20on%20the%20International%20Space%20Station%20on%20November%2030.%26nbsp%3B%20The%20space%20agency%20described%20this%20as%20a%20%u201Chistoric%20harvest%u201D%20was%20part%20of%20NASA%u2019s%20plant%20experiment%2C%20Plant%20Habitat-02%20%28PH-02%29%20that%20seeks%20to%20understand%20how%20plants%20grow%20in%20microgravity%20conditions%2C%20the%20space%20agency%20said%20in%20a%20press%20release.

The%20radishes%20were%20grown%20in%20the%20Advanced%20Plant%20Habitat%20%28APH%29%2C%20a%20growth%20chamber%20for%20plant%20research.%20The%20chamber%2C%20along%20with%20its%20LED%20lights%20and%20controlled%20release%20of%20release%20fertilizer%2C%20delivers%20water%2C%20nutrients%2C%20and%20oxygen%20to%20the%20plant%20roots.

Radishes%20were%20chosen%20since%20they%20are%20fairly%20well%20understood%20by%20scientists%20and%20achieve%20maturity%20in%20just%2027%20days.%20The%20space%20agency%20also%20released%20a%20time-lapse%20video%20that%20tracked%20the%20growth%20of%20the%20vegetables.%20Here%u2019s%20the%20video%3A

With%20the%20help%20of%20The%20Vegetable%20Production%20System%2C%20known%20as%20Veggie%2C%20the%20space%20station%20has%20successfully%20grown%20a%20variety%20of%20plants%2C%20including%20three%20types%20of%20lettuce%2C%20Chinese%20cabbage%2C%20mizuna%20mustard%2C%20red%20Russian%20kale%2C%20and%20zinnia%20flowers.
