January 12 marks
the birth anniversary of Indian philosopher Swami Vivekananda. Also known as National
Youth Day, or ‘Yuva Diwas’, the day signifies his teachings and practices for
the youth.

On January 12, 1863, the philosophical scholar was born as Narendranath Datta.

Being a disciple of religious leader Ramakrishna Paramhansa, he
soon gained prominence for his teachings of Vedanta and Yoga in the western
world.

He played a key role in the freedom reform movements of the country
and contributed to the concept of nationalism.

In 1893, the philosophical
leader gave a speech on channelling the energy of the youth, at the Parliament
of World’s Religions
in Chicago.

He went on to sacrifice
his materialistic desires and lived the life of a monk. His most influential
teachings revolved around the theme of love and knowledge of the soul. He believed
that if one is confused between following his heart and mind, the individual
should follow his heart’s desire. One of his most inspiring teachings were his
ideals on truth, and how truth can often be uncomfortable.

Following his massive
impact on the younger generation, the Government of India announced January 12
day as National Youth Day, in the year 1984. The Government added that Swami
Vivekananda
’s ideals could be greatly inspiring for the Indian youth to incorporate
into their lives.

The day is observed
in many educational institutions throughout the country, with speeches, processions,
seminars, and more.

Many organisations also plan certain cultural
events to celebrate the day.

Several government
organisations and non-profit organisations participate and plan events for
National Youth Day.

This year marks
the 159th birth anniversary of
the philosophy figure.

To celebrate the occasion, the Ministry of Tourism of North East has
planned to organise an essay writing competition, an extempore, and a quiz event.

Furthermore, the 25th National Youth Festival will be
inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who will address the five-day
festival, set to be organised in Puducherry.
