Amidst military standoff
with India in eastern Ladakh, Chinese President Xi Jinping has appointed a new
General as the Commander of the People’s Liberation Army’s Western Theatre
Command which oversees the China-India border, PTI reported. Xi Jinping heads
the Central Military Commission (CMC), which is the overall high-command of the
PLA.

Xi Jinping appointed
Gen. Zhang Xudong as the Commander of the Western Theatre Command. Gen. Zhang
Xudong, who has mostly in other theatre commands of the PLA, succeeds 65-year-old
Gen. Zhao Zongqi.

Apart from the
general, the President has also promoted four senior Chinese military and armed
police officers, including Guo Puxiao, Political Commissar of the Logistic
Support Department of the CMC, and Li Wei, Political Commissar of the PLA
Strategic Support Force.

Indian and China engaged
in a deadly clash in June 15 following which the relationship between the two leading
economic powerhouses reached the breaking point. Since then, the two countries have been locked in a tense border standoff in eastern Ladakh.

India and China have
held several rounds of diplomatic talks resolve the prolonged standoff. At the
latest round, that took place on December 18, the two sides said that they have
agreed to continue work towards ensuring complete disengagement of troops in
all friction points along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
