According to a National Family Health Survey (NFHS), that was conducted among 1.1 lakh women and 1 lakh men across India recently, women have more sex partners than men in 11 states and Union Territories on average. However, the men (4 per cent) in these regions beat the women (0.5 per cent) in the percentage of having sexual intercourse with another person who has no relations with them or does not live together.

The states and Union Territories where the survey was conducted are Rajasthan, Haryana, Chandigarh, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Madhya Pradesh, Assam, Kerala, Lakshadweep, Puducherry, and Tamil Nadu.

The survey data also suggested that women in Rajasthan have an average of 3.1 sexual partners, compared to the 1.8 for men, meaning the state has the highest number of women in all of the surveyed regions.

The survey aimed to assess HIVAIDS risk for people having more than one sexual partner. Its data also suggested that the percentage of men having sexual intercourse with someone not related to them or living together in one year before the survey is 4 per cent, compared to the 0.5 per cent of women.

The fifth edition of the National Family Health Survey was conducted between 2019 and 2021 in 707 districts of the 11 states and Union Territories. It also generated data on the socio-economic status and background characteristics of the men and women, which would help in formulating policy and implementing an effective programme.

The survey was conducted by KS James, SK Singh, Hemkhothang Lhungdim, Chander Shekhar, Laxmi Kant Dwivedi, Sarang Pedgaonkar and Fred Arnold.

The NFHS data also provided a detailed insight into the household population and housing characteristics, characteristics of respondents, fertility preferences, family planning, child mortality, maternal & child health, adult health issues and HIV-AIDS-related knowledge among others.
