Authorities have activated airspace restrictions ahead of the demolition of the Supertech twin towers in Noida on Sunday afternoon to avoid aeroplanes from being harmed by the dust cloud that will rise following the buildings’ collapse.

What airspace limitations have been enforced in advance of the dismantling of the Supertech twin towers?

Airspace within one nautical mile (or 1.8 km) radius of the demolition site has been designated unavailable for planes to operate during the demolition exercise. Air traffic controllers (ATCOs) in charge of the Delhi airspace would have to guarantee that flights avoid the restricted region.

Will this have an impact on flight operations?

Given that just a small and localised area of the airspace has been deemed unavailable for use, the potential flight time for aircraft entering Delhi airport from the east is only 8-10 minutes. Flights are already being planned to avoid flying above the demolition site, according to flight tracking website Flightradar24.

How will the demolition in Noida effect flights?

Typically, planes flying over the demolition site have commenced their approach to Delhi Airport and are descending at fewer than 8,000 feet. A dust cloud created by the demolition could pose vision concerns for pilots flying through the area. According to authorities, the dust will remain in the air for at least 15-20 minutes following the clearance operation.

When do authorities often apply airspace restrictions?

When there are potential risks along a flight route or at a specific place that could impact the aircraft, authorities proclaim airspace inaccessible. Airspace limitations are also enforced when competent authorities determine that there are security hazards. For example, during the Independence Day and Republic Day celebrations, as well as during rehearsals, Delhi airspace is restricted for specific time periods.
