Micro blogging site Twitter has added new features for users in the past few years by emphasising on Twitter Live and launching Fleets. But now, the US-based social media giant might
discontinue ‘Periscope’, its live video broadcast app, as per a code in the
Twitter app, according to media reports.

At present,
Twitter has not confirmed the news but a developer Jane Machun Wong
discovered a line in the app code that hinted that Periscope is going
to shut down.

As per TechCrunch, Wong pointed out that currently there are no
references of shutdown in the obtainable version of the Periscope app. However,
she also said that the two apps share some codes, which led to the screenshot
getting “slipped into Twitter”. She also feels that one of the reasons behind
its shutdown can be the acquisition of Squad, which is expected to “contribute
to the audio, video and conversations areas of Twitter”, reported The Indian
Express.

Periscope, launched in 2015 was
taken by the social media giant even before its launch in order to counter
Meerkat, a live-streaming tool for Twitter and Facebook.

Meerkat, launched in 2015, after
few years was re-launched as the Houseparty app, which became quite famous
and trending during the coronavirus lockdown in 2020. Later, it was taken by
Epic.

Currently, Twitter has been
emphasising on Twitter Live content instead of Twitter Live powered by
Periscope. One of the important reasons for the Periscope’s toppling has also
been the popularity of TikTok.
