Phungyar assembly constituency has A.S. Hopingson of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) taking on Victor Keishing of the Indian National Congress (INC) and Leishiyo Keishing of the Naga People’s Front (NPF) this year in the Manipur assembly elections. 

K. Leishiyo of the NPF had won the Phungyar seat in 2017 when the INC swept Manipur winning 28 of Manipur’s 60 assembly seats. Leishiyo had beaten his closest rival Somi Awungshi by over 4,778 votes. Awungshi had contested that election on a BJP ticket.

In 2012, the seat was won by D. Korungthang of the INC. 

Phungyar falls under the Ukhrul district and the Outer Manipur Lok Sabha constituency, which is made up of 28 assembly seats.

Lorho S. Pfoze of Naga People’s Front represented Outer Manipur as a member of Parliament in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Pfoze defeated Houlim Shokhopao Mate from the BJP with a margin of  73,782 votes.

The Phungyar assembly constituency voted in the second phase of the Manipur elections on March 5, 2022, along with 21 other constituencies. 

Results will be declared on March 10, along with those for elections in four other states, including Uttar Pradesh.
