Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday wished the nation on the occasion of Pongal, Bhogi, Uttarayan, Makar Sankranti and Magh Bihu. “Across India we are marking different festivals which signify India’s vibrant cultural diversity. My greetings on these festivals,” he wrote.

The PM also addressed a tweet to the people of Tamil Nadu for Pongal, “Pongal is synonymous with the vibrant culture of Tamil Nadu. On this special occasion, my greetings to everyone and especially the Tamil people spread all over the world. I pray that our bond with nature and the spirit of brotherhood in our society are deepened.”

For Magh Bihu in Assam, he wrote, “Magh Bihu greetings to you all. I pray that this festival enhances happiness and prosperity in everyone’s lives.”

The festivals, called by various names across the country, essentially honour the beginning of a new harvest season and the end of the winter months. People mark the day by traditional festivities, making offerings, cooking delicacies, and even flying kites, as the sun moves from the southern hemisphere to the north. 

Several politicians took to their social media handles to wish the country.

President of India, Ram Nath Kovind, extended his greetings, “Greetings to all on Lohri, Makar Sankranti, Pongal, Bhogali Bihu, Uttarayan & Paush Parva. Highlighting the unity in diversity that defines our country, these festivals underline our organic relationship with nature. May the festivals bring prosperity and happiness to everyone.”

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh wrote, “Greetings to everyone on the auspicious occasion of Makar Sankranti, Pongal, Bhogali Bihu, Uttarayan and Paush Parva. May everyone be blessed with peace, happiness and prosperity. Praying for your good health and wellbeing.”

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi tweeted, “On this day of festivities, I extend greetings on the occasion of Bhogi, Uttarayan and Ima Imoinu Iratpa Numit. Wishes for health, peace and happiness.”

Former Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan also wrote, “Sending warm wishes to everyone on the auspicious occasion of Pongal. May the festival fill everyone’s life with abundant joy & prosperity.”

Even as the restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic dampen celebrations, the spirit of the festivities remains alive.
