Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation and perform ‘Bhoomi Pujan’ for the new Parliament building in New Delhi on December 10, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Prakash Birla informed on Saturday, ANI reported.

The building that is said to be designed as a triangle, will be constructed close to the existing complex, say officials. It will be constructed by Tata Projects at a cost of Rs 861.90 crore, officials said in September.

In a statement released in October, Lok Sabha Secretariat had stated that the construction of a new Parliament building will begin in December this year and is likely to be completed by October 2022.

The new building will have a grand Constitution Hall to showcase India’s democratic heritage, a lounge for members of Parliament, a library, multiple committee rooms, dining areas and ample parking space, PTI reported.

The current building was designed by Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker, who were responsible for planning and construction of New Delhi. The building is circular and is one of India’s most acclaimed monuments; it faces a statue of Mahatma Gandhi.

Birla, in January, said that the 75th Independence Day will be celebrated by holding Parliament sessions in the new building.
